It was an honour to judge this show alongside Noreen Harris of Australia who judged the dogs. After a brief discussion, we agreed very amicably on the major awards, BIS going to Ellis' bitch Railfield Rainflower and RBIS/BOS to the Short's dog Collooney Going Dutch who gained his title on the day. BPIS went to the Clarkson's dog Demerlay Rags To Riches. Two veterans were super examples of the breed - AUST/UK Ch Peperone Solid Gold and Ch Sporting Fields Winged Dove over Dumbriton, with the bitch taking BVIS. I agreed with my co-judge's comment that this was the hardest class of the day to decide.
With the diversity of type withing the breed, it is not always easy to get 'typey' line ups, but with the super entry of 140 bitches making 163 entries, even allowing for absentees I did my best to achieve this. Inevitably, this meant that some bitches, which I really admire and on another in different company, would be delighted to place highly, had to go cardless - this is the downside of judging.
Veteran Bitch (8)
1st - Stock and Gilmour's Ch Sporting Field Winged Dove over Dumbriton (IMP USA). White bitch of lovely size and type. 8 years old. Super sound and in good condition. Smooth lines, lovely clean shoulders, deep brisket, strong loin, correct angulation and so well balanced. A true example of power with grace. BVIS.
2nd - Wayman's Pipijay Starlight of Scarletfair. Brindle/white trim. 9 years old. Feminine head, good expression. Deep brisket and well balanced all through. Sound on the move.
Minor Puppy Bitch (14)
1st - Newton's Jenaul Nutella of Nevedith. Seven month brindle and white. Super sound with good muscle tone and such steady movement for her age. Pleasing head and neck, well balance correct bone. Pressed hard for best puppy bitch, but just had to give way to a more mature girl.
2nd - Morris and Waddell's Collooney Slack Alice. Just six months, a real baby but nothing slack about this golden fawn - I loved her. So steady and sound on the move. Well balanced, lovely size and good bone. Should have a bright future.
Puppy Bitch (9)
1st - Seimet, Day and Johnsen's Demerlay Regrette Rien of Sejoda. Ten month pale fawn, full of quality. Classic type, well balanced with good bone and my hand flowed smoothly from her head to her tail over her clean shoulders and strong loin. Movement true, her long, flowing stride won her this class and BPB.
2nd - Robertson's Sheol Golden Child. Pretty golden fawn, white trim. Lots of quality and true movement. Nice balance with good thigh and second thigh. Giving away nearly three months to the winner. Just needs time to strengthen over the loin to complete her topline.
Junior Bitch (14)
1st - Ormand's Linalkin Meadow Lark. Brindle totally lacking in any form of exaggeration - and so could easily be overlooked, except that on closer examination she is so well made. A compact, but balance bitch with good head, neck, shoulder and topline. Strong thighs and low hocks, propelling her well round the ring. Free flowing front movement and completely sound.
2nd - Mycorft's Supeta's Dazzalicious. Smart brindle/white. Lovely bitch with deep brisket, good length and overall balance. Pretty head, correct topline, Moved very well. Close decision.
Yearling Bitch (11)
1st - Wilson's Cornstalk Charm in Tealas. Pale fawn, sweet expression, nice size and plenty of substance. Good neck, smooth over the shoulder s and nice topline. Well muscled, strong quarters. Very sound and free in movement.
2nd - Johnston's Danluke Dance of Love JW ShCM. Super quality fawn/white with lovely expression, good body, plenty of length and sound hindquarters. Very sound, free and true movement. Unfortunately she decided not to co-operate fully with her handler otherwise she may have been my winner. Close decision.
Maiden Bitch (13)
1st - 1st Puppy Bitch
2nd - Ogilvie's Demerlay Ritzi Ruby. Smart brindle/white trim. Fourth in puppy. Good head, well filled front, nice neck and shoulders. Well balanced and a good mover. May benefit from carrying just a little less condition.
Novice Bitch (5)
1st - Grisoli's Loroli Let's Boogie. Brindle, white trim. Lovely bitch with good head and neck. Clean shoulders, deep brisket and good length. Very quarters giving her sound and powerful movement, also has good extension on forehand movement.
2nd - Smith's Cobyco Chance To Foxtrot. Brindle/white. Good head, neck, shoulders. Very deep brisket. Sound, free movement. Close decision, just preferred the overall balance of the winner.
3rd - Green's Crosscop It's A Mystery To Me with Bronchinbelle. I must comment on the young handler of this bitch, which I shortlisted in Junior and placed VHC in Yearling. She could come show some of the more mature and experienced handlers a thing or two, and really got the best out of her whippet, which is of very good type and super sound. Just a little bit more compact than those placed above her, but could not be left out.
Graduate Bitch (15)
1st - Hedley's Knoxhill Eclipse. Gleeming black with white trim. Superb condition and such a happy girl. On first glance she can appear to be lacking in depth of brisket, but the bottom couple of inches is white and can be lost in the background. In fact, she has plenty of depth, good length in her strong loin and well developed thighs, all contributed to her powerful, flowing, sound movement.
2nd - Ellis' Railfield Rainhat. Fawn white trim. Classy bitch full of quality. So well made with love depth, length and good quarters. A balanced picture with sound, flowing movement. Close decision.
Post Graduate Bitch (14)
1st - Windle's Whirlygig Ruby Tuesday at Birchwhips. This bitch caught my eye as soon as she came into the ring. Red brindle with white trim in gleaming coat and condition. She has taken time to mature but is now looking really good. Good head and neck, clean shoulders flowing into good topline. Super hindquarters, with firm muscles, but not overdone and so retains grace in her very sound movement. Moved round the ring with purpose and good forward extension. Seriously considered for the top awards.
Limit Bitch (18)
1st - Phillips-Griffith's Adagio Careless Whisper to Astri. I saw this beautiful red brindle bitch in Sweden as a puppy. I liked her then and I still do. Elegant bitch with lovely head and expression. Good neck flowing into clean shoulders, strong loin and powerful hindquarters. Deep brisket and ribbing extends well back. With her forward reaching and driving movement she flowed around the ring and moves true in all directions. Another one seriously considered for top honours.
2nd - Holland's Elmanash Spanish Gold. Have always liked this red brindle of lovely size. Feminine expression. More compact type than the winner, but so well made and balanced. Well let down hocks giving her the power to match her good forehand extension in her free flowing profile movement. Very true coming and going.
Open Bitch (15)
I needed at least 6 red cards in this class, and in trying to achieve a sensible, typey line up I had to leave out at least one bitch which I would have liked to keep in.
1st - Ellis' Railfield Rainflower JW. A fawn with white trim who just oozes quality. Everything there just as it should be from her feminine head to her strong hindquarters. Presented in super condition and handled to get the best out of her. moved effortlessly around the ring with a sound, flowing stride. She has taken more time to mature than some do, but I think is the type that will stay at her best for quite some time to come. With nothing overstated there is nothing to go wrong. Please to award her the BCC (her second) and delighted when she achieved BIS in agreement with my co-judge.
2nd - Howgate and Hull's Palmik Starlight Surprise JW. Red fawn of super type and quality, and such a sound mover. Lovely smooth lines, good fill in front, correct shoulders and well made quarters. Happy to give her this 2nd place and the RCC, but when she challenged the DCC for RBIS, her immaturity showed up. At only 2 years old I am sure she has lots more successes ahead.
Special Racing/Lure Coursing Bitch (1)
1st - Third's Talaria Bianca of Bruntsfield. Fawn bitch in fine, gleaming coat and super muscular condition. Good head and neck. Clean shoulders and good arch over the loin. Strong well developed hindquarters. Moved soundly in all directions. Well deserving of a red card even though she stood alone.
