Pam Marston-Pollock
I was delighted to be invited to judge at this anniversary show as President and looking forward to it immensely and to be able to co-judge with the Society's Patron, Mary Lowe. I was not disappointed and found what I considered to be typy, shapely and feminine Whippets. I was, however, concerned that there were more than an acceptable number of incorrect mouths. Many misplaced teeth and in one case only four front top teeth. Hind movement was generally good with plenty of width to the hindquarters, but fronts are varied and generally incorrect with a variety of front action.
Veteran Bitch (10, 2 abs)
1st - Stock & Gilmour's Ch Sportingfield Winged Dove Over Dumbriton (Imp). I was unlucky not to have had the chance to judge her in her prime, so was delighted to have the opportunity to go over her. She is such a feminine lady of such quality, classic head and eye, beautifully elegant with a longreach of neck, which sets smoothly into her shoulders. She has shapely ribbing, carried back and in unison her topline is correctly arched. Unexaggerated hindquarters, with well toned muscle and she moved the soundest in this class.
2nd - Third's Bruntsfield Roanapoll. Fawn of lovely size and overall shape Typy head rather stronger in skull than 1 and not the foreface to balance. Moderate reach of neck. Good bone substance and fill in. Well ribbed back and again a lovely correctly set arch to her topline. Rather more length of stifle to hock, moved soundly.
3rd - Mycroft's Supeta's Loverlee.
Minor Puppy Bitch (11, 2 abs)
1st - Robertson's Sheol Touch of Gold headed a class of promising girls who are all at different stages of development. She is feminine and of classic type. Quality head with lovely expression, neat ears. Reachy neck, flowing body shape into well set hindquarters. Balanced rear with good muscletone. She is exactly the right development for her age and rightly has to settle and stabilise but excelled in profile movement.
2nd - Service's Veredon Vanilla Owl. This quality bitch did herself no favours when standing and it was only on closer examination that her virtues came to light. Her qualities lie in her shape and overall construction. She has a lovely head and eye, good reach of neck of good strength, lovely forechest and spring of rib. Broad well muscled loin and well set hindquarters. Moved soundly despite her handler, who needs to help this bitch not hinder her.
3rd - Morris, Waddell & Place's April Showers at Crosscop
Puppy Bitch (12, 4 abs)
1st - Wilton-Clark's Shalfleet Sugar Frosting. Bitch of super size. Feminine balanced head with good depth of chin and dark eye. Strong muscular neck of good width and length. Very good shoulder placement and upper arm length. Well sprung rib, brisket down to elbows. Correct flowing topline, broad loin, flowing into well set hindquarters. Doesn't need any more muscle development. Moved with good forward reach.
2nd - Paterson's Wheelspin Pleasant Fly. Another of good size and balance. Totally different type, but classic non glamourous all Whippet. Combining strength and shape, strong neck of good length. Super bone and feet. Compact body to super shape and body proportions. Well muscled hindquarters, just needs confidence to settle into herself.
3rd - Howgate's Palmik Magic Trick.
Junior Bitch (12, 2 abs)
1st - Morris & Waddell's Crosscop Count On Me. Dark brindle, most feminine, sweetest head but a little round in the eye, neat ears. Good reach of neck, smoothly into well made front, best of upper arm angulation. Mature body development, broad back with good muscle tone all through. Elegant type, maturing nicely, moved very soundly.
2nd - Paterson's Wheelspin Breakaway. Litter sister of 2nd in Puppy and very similar in make and shape. Another true Whippet type, good size and shapely Would prefer a darker eye, but this is only nit picking as she is well constructed, correct feet and moved soundly maintaining her outline. BPIS.
3rd - McLeod's Peperone Passion Play
Yearling Bitch (10, 1 abs)
1st - Johnston's Danluke Dicky Bird. Well balanced bitch of lovely type and elegance. Balanced head with good strength of foreface and flat skull. Well laid shoulder, could do with more spring to rib, but of good depth and underline. Nicely arched over her loin which is well muscled and broad. Mature body and the soundest mover.
2nd - Short's Collooney Racey Lacey. Feminine of different build. Not as strong in foreface but has a lovely dark eye and pigmentation for her colour. Good plains to her head. Overall flowing shape to her body, slightly shorter in rib. Stood over the ground well but flattened out slightly in profile movement over her loin. Moved soundly but not as settled as 1.
3rd - Howgate's Am Ch Merci Isle Magnolia at Palmik (Imp).
Novice Bitch (10, 2 abs)
1st - Morris, Waddell & Place's April Showers at Crosscop, 3rd in Minor Puppy. Lovely type would prefer more definition of stop and underjaw. Good reach of neck and front construction. Well bodied, just at a difficult in between stage, needing to pull together to steady her profile outline. Moves soundly front and back.
2nd - Third's Tango Time of Bruntsfield. Another at an immature stage, more compact in shape and collected in profile but standing looked too angulated at rear. Well proportioned, just needs time to settle and come together.
3rd - Potts' Klondyke Imastar.
Graduate Bitch (7, 1 abs)
1st - Wignall's Starswift Sunbeam, sweet fawn bitch, feminine head with good shaped eye. Needs to relax and settle down into herself which would lengthen her out. Good proportions, compact in type and flowing outline into hindquarters. Soundest mover both front and back a longer stride would be better in profile.
2nd - Noden's Sheol Golden Lady. Typy head of good shape with depth of chin, flat skull. Good forehand and length of rib. Lacked a little rise over the loin, broad hindquarters. Expected more drive from her hindquarters, but sound enough front and back. Would benefit from less weight and harder muscletone.
3rd - McFarlane's Cornstalk La Diva.
Post Graduate Bitch (16, 3 abs)
1st - Morris, Waddell & Donaldson's Collooney Slack Alice at Crosscop. Good size and overall shape. Lovely headpiece with good pigmentation. Correct reach of neck and front assembly, nice to see forechest. Good length of ribbing and balancing underline. Flowing outline. moved soundly with good width, close up to the RCC winner.
2nd - Mason's Aphreal Casting Pearl. Rather taller set but still feminine. Won this place on her conformation. Good shoulder placement and upper arm angulation. Good fill in of forechest. Well boned down with good sized feet. not as long in ribbing as 1 but still good flow over the backline. Well developed hindquarters, moved with good width, especially in profile with true Whippet style.
3rd - Illingsworth & Anderson-Illingsworth's Birkonbrae Sun Blush.
Mid Limit Bitch (9, 2 abs)
1st - Davies & Gilmour's Turnstone Tiger Lily. Won here on shape and construction. Would like more strength of foreface, flat skull. Good reach of neck set into well developed front, best construction in this class. Forechest evident and good depth of brisket. Flowing topline continuing to her well set hindquarters. Soundest mover and kept her shape in profile.
2nd - Dixon's Millwold Mulling It Over. Similar in type to 1. Broad neck with good layback of shoulder, would like shade more upper arm angulation. Strong bone substance and good sized feet. Similar shape of body to 1, with good spring of rib. Not covering as much ground standing but sound light mover.
3rd - Hambling's Chaseover Scaramouche.
Limit Bitch (13, 3 abs)
1st - Illingsworth & Anderson-Illingsworth's Birkonbrae Tam O'Shanter. Lovely shapely bitch of quality. Feminine head with flat skull, would like shade more foreface. Long reach of neck and super front construction with fill in of forechest. Mature depth of brisket, good tuck up. Strong body and topline. Soundest mover.
2nd - Mycroft's Supeta's Dazzalicious. Totally different type, good size. Would prefer cleaner skull and better eye shape but feminine head. Good reach of crested neck. Shapely body with good depth and definition. Lacked a little length of upper arm. Moved soundly keeping her shape in profile.
3rd - Syke's Cedaridge Vanilla Skies Over Veredon.
Open Bitch (18, 5 abs)
One of the nicest classes I have judged for some time. Girls often show their feelings and I felt some today looked tired and lacked lustre, probably after a hard season.
1st - Lempereur's Multi Ch Blue Spring's Elektra. One of the best bitches I have ever judged. Classic fawn, balanced head with lovely eye shape, colour and depth of chin. Correct length of neck with super front construction, elbows well tucked in. Mature body, good tuck up. Correct length of loin, strong, well balanced hindquarters. Soundest of movers with good width and good extension in profile. Her handler sometimes unbalances her on the move and needs to work with her to maximise her super virtues. I was pleased my co-judge agreed she should go BIS
2nd - Wheeler's Ch Courthill Carmen Cleeve at Ranveli. Slightly higher set and more compact in body than 1 but still covers the ground both standing and moving. Quality head not as strong in foreface but lovely eye shape and backskull. Good reach of neck with good fill in of forechest. Correct underline and shapely turn of body. Not as well let down in hindquarters as 1 but one of the soundest movers today and her most positive front movement won her the Res CC.
3rd - Howgate's Ch Palmik Starlight Surprise
